Rev. Mat Miles
The Rev. Dr. James R. Miles passed away peacefully at Pecos County Memorial Hospital on October 1, 2026. “Revdoc” was ordained into ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA) on December 29, 1976, and served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Stockton.
Jim had a knack for sticking with things for 44 years. He moved his family of five from Sonora in June of 1982 with his wife, Judy. They were married for 44 years until her death in 2011, and he served the Fort Stockton Presbyterian church for 44 years until his own. He was then married to his beloved Angie in 2014.
Jim was graduated from Sul Ross State College in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science, and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1976 with a Master of Divinity and then in 1999 with a Doctor of Ministry. He served the church with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love. He is fondly remembered by many as the “community pastor”, always willing to help anyone in need. He always said he never wanted to retire from ministry, and he lived out that intention, dying just 90 days before the 50th anniversary of his ordination.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Robert and Charlotte Miles of Pecos and his deceased wife, Judy. He is survived by his wife Angie, a sister, Ruth and husband Gary Biller of Huntsville, AL; Three sons, James of Fort Stockton, Matthew and wife Stessa of Fort Davis, Stephen and wife Joyce of Houston; and a stepdaughter, Brittany of Fort Stockton; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Family will accept visitors at First Presbyterian Church from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday October 5 with a memorial service to follow on Tuesday at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at a date to be announced at Hillcrest Cemetery in Fort Davis.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Fort Stockton at PO Box 100, Fort Stockton, TX 79735 or to Fort Stockton Rotary Club, PO Box 1111, Fort Stockton, TX 79735.
