Edelmira Coronado Calzada, 91, of Sanderson, Texas, passed away on October 18, 2021, at her home.
Viewing will be at 8 a.m. and a rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at St. James Catholic Church in Sanderson.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Francis Njoku, officiating. Burial will follow at Santa Rita Cemetery. Arrangements are by Eternity Funeral Home.
Edelmira was born in Sanderson, Texas to Manuel Coronado and Jesusita Dela Garza on August 23, 1930. She married Antonio G. Calzada on September 7, 1947, in Sanderson. She attended Sanderson High School. Edelmira was certified as a masseuse in 1952. She worked as an LVN at the Val Verde Memorial Hospital in Del Rio, Texas in 1968. She served as Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 for 22 years. She took special pride in being elected the first Hispanic to hold that office. Edelmira was a strong advocate for the Hispanic community and assisted anyone that came to her JP office looking for help. She loved listening and dancing to Mariachi music with her late husband, Toño. One of her favorite past times was cruising the streets of Sanderson.
Edelmira was an active St. James Parishioner to the end. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Society and held a special devotion to the Virgen de Guadalupe. She served on the Santa Rita Cemetery Committee for several years. On July 3, 2021, she was presented with the key to the city by Terrell County officials.
Edelmira is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Antonio Sr., her son Antonio Jr., her daughter Josie, grandson Jay Rubio, great grandchildren Melissa Cruz and James Cruz and great-great granddaughter Chassidy Ramirez.
Edelmira is survived by her daughter Yolanda Connelly, her brother Andres Marquez, 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 27 great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Calzada, Victor Calzada, Ricardo Cruz, Ruben Cruz, Alex Romo Jr., Andy Romo, and Rene Rubio. Honorary pallbearers are Tony Calzada III, Eric Rubio, and Trinidad Rubio.
Memorials may be given to St. James Catholic Church. The family wishes to extend our most sincere thanks to Pecos County Memorial Hospital Home Health and Hospice, Sanderson Rural Clinic, Care Etc., all medical staff, caregivers, family and friends far and near who have reached out to console our family.
